Ummm....Really?
2 months agoToday was “spread the word to end the word” day but it seemed to get overshadowed by the Kony campaign, at least on Facebook and twitter.
I used to use the R-word on a regular basis. I wouldn’t even notice when I was using it…it was just part of my vocabulary.
The beautiful girl in my picture is Kristina, my best friend, Will’s, older sister. About two years ago when I met Kristina I had no idea the impact she would have on me. I always knew that Will had a sister with down syndrome but for some reason I never thought that my using the word “retarded” could be offensive. One day in the car I told a story and Will just didn’t respond. I got pretty upset because I thought he was just ignoring me but then he told me that I had used the R-word and I could tell that he was very upset about it. Since then, I have never once used it except to tell this story.
Kristina is so incredibly smart. She could challenge just about anyone’s sports knowledge from baseball to hockey to football. She deserves nothing less than respect. Since I’ve been at college, I have volunteered with my school’s special Olympics program and I have met so many other people with special needs who also deserve that respect. If you ever have the privilege of spending time with someone with special needs I am confident that you will notice how incredibly happy they are, how they do not judge, and how loving and caring they are.
It is not hard to cut one word out of your vocabulary and it makes such a difference. Now, whenever I hear anyone say the word I can’t help but cringe and hope that no one else who has a family member or friend with special needs heard it.
Give everyone respect no matter what their intellectual or physical abilities and spread the word to end the word!
Life just doesn’t get any better than this.DYING.
and i’m dead.

Just a standard dragtastic evening in Orange County. Loved the Whitney tributes.
